Sioux Falls School District Superintendent

We will have a conversation with Rotarian Dr. Brian Maher as he prepares to pass the baton at the end of the month.  We'll discuss managing the state's largest school district amid a pandemic, what challenges still face the district when classes resume in the fall as well as finalizing the redistricting process and preparing to open the two new schools in the district.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Brian Maher is the Superintendent of the Sioux Falls Public Schools in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He began serving in this capacity on July 1, 2015. Sioux Falls, located in eastern
South Dakota, has a population of 175,000 with an MSA of 250,000+. The K-12 student enrollment in Sioux Falls Public Schools is 23,655. Prior to moving to Sioux Falls he served as
Superintendent of the Kearney Public Schools in Kearney, Nebraska.

Dr. Maher received a bachelor’s degree in math education from Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska and master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Nebraska, Omaha.
Dr. Maher has been a teacher of all levels of mathematics as well as a high school physics teacher. He has been a varsity level coach in football, basketball, soccer and track and field.
In addition to teaching and coaching, Dr. Maher has had the opportunity to be an athletic director, assistant principal, a high school principal as well as a superintendent. He was once
named Nebraska’s New Principal of the Year as well as named Nebraska’s Superintendent of the Year.

Dr. Maher currently holds positions on the South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors, SD Symphony Board of Directors, as well as serving in board
capacity on the Sioux Empire United Way. Further, as Superintendent, Dr. Maher serves as an ex-officio member of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce Board. He and his wife, Peg,
are parents to three grown children – Lindsey, Brett and Maggie.
