Ballot Measure Series: IM 28 (Consumables Tax)

Join us for Rotary at the South Dakota Military Heritage Alliance on Monday, October 21st. We'll be hosting the next program in our Ballot Measure Series. Rotarian Dan Doyle will sit down with proponents and opponents of Initiated Measure 28.

According to Ballotpedia, "Initiated Measure 28 would prohibit a state sales tax on anything sold for human consumption, except alcoholic beverages or prepared food. The ballot initiative would define prepared food as food that is sold heated or with utensils. Under Initiative Measure 28, local governments would not be prohibited from levying a tax.

As of 2024, South Dakota had a 4.2% sales and use tax, which applies to groceries. South Dakota allows cities to establish an additional 2% sales tax. In 2023, the South Dakota State Legislature reduced the statewide sales tax from 4.5% to 4.2% for four years."

The buffet lunch will be available for purchase at the door beginning at 11:30 am. The menu will be: Hot Beef with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Bread, Sweet Corn and Salad Bar.

The presentation, at the club’s regular weekly meeting, will be held at the South Dakota Military Heritage Alliance in Sioux Falls and will begin at noon. All Downtown Sioux Falls Rotary Club programs are open only to Rotarians and their guests. All programs are subject to the club's Privacy Policy. Local media are invited to attend to record the session.
